Decommissioning Operations Manager
We are seeking a highly experienced Decommissioning Operations Manager to lead and manage radiological engineering projects supporting commercial nuclear decommissioning efforts. This position plays a pivotal role in the planning, development, and execution of Radiation Survey packages and related documentation, including Radiological Site Characterization Projects and MARSSIM Final Status Surveys.
The ideal candidate will bring extensive expertise in health physics, strong project management skills, and a commitment to safety and regulatory compliance in highly complex nuclear environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement comprehensive site survey and sampling plans in accordance with MARSSIM and MARSAME standards.
- Oversee the selection and application of radiation detection instrumentation (stationary, portable, and laboratory-based).
- Analyze radioanalytical results and generate regulatory-quality documentation and reports.
- Develop and manage detailed project schedules, budgets, and resource plans, ensuring alignment with regulatory timelines and technical milestones.
- Lead multidisciplinary teams and act as a primary liaison between internal stakeholders, contractors, and regulatory bodies (e.g., NRC, state agencies).
- Create technical position papers, procedures, work instructions, and dose calculations supporting project objectives.
- Ensure quality and integrity of radiological data through robust Data Quality Objectives (DQOs) and Data Quality Analysis (DQA).
- Mentor and supervise health physics personnel, fostering a culture of operational excellence and ALARA principles.
- Continually seek and implement process improvements and best practices within the decommissioning domain.
Qualifications
Education & Certifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or a related physical science.
- Professional certification such as CHP (Certified Health Physicist) or PMP (Project Management Professional) is highly valued.
Experience:
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in health physics or radiological engineering.
- At least 5 years of direct experience with MARSSIM-based projects.
- Proven experience managing radiological engineering or decommissioning projects at commercial nuclear facilities.
- Demonstrated success in navigating regulatory frameworks and managing communications with oversight agencies.
Technical Proficiencies:
- Strong knowledge of MARSSIM and MARSAME.
- Proficiency in project management tools (e.g., MS Project).
- Skilled in the use of industry software: Excel, Word, VISIO, Visual Sample Plan (VSP), RESRAD, AutoCAD, GIS, and others.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
- Primarily office-based with occasional fieldwork.
- Ability to sit for extended periods and work on a computer.
- Occasionally required to climb, kneel, or crawl in field environments.
- Must be able to lift/move up to 10 pounds.
- Requires full visual acuity including depth perception and color vision.
